Health and wellbeing at Royd Nursery Infant School

At Royd Nursery Infant School, wellbeing is a fundamental subject which is taught discretely to our pupils through a wide range of learning opportunities.  We want to help our children to be healthy (physically and mentally), kind, considerate, safe and respectful, so they are able to build strong and positive relationships and are ready to learn.

Our core values of respecting others and being considerate, are intertwined into our health and wellbeing programme of learning.  RSHE lessons and assemblies support our children in following the school’s motto of learning, caring and sharing together, resulting in a positive impact to children’s learning, behaviour and wellbeing.  We use Learn Sheffield materials to support our teaching of the statutory RSHE curriculum, with our teaching focusing on three main areas; relationships, health and wellbeing and living in the wider world.

Helping our children to develop their emotional intelligence is a huge part of our health and wellbeing learning.  We use the ‘Zones of Regulation’ as a tool for the children to develop an understanding of the emotions they are feeling, why they are feeling the way they are and how different strategies can be used to manage their feelings and emotions.

It is clear that children learn better when they are happy, emotionally intelligent and comfortable in their learning environment.  We monitor our children’s wellbeing numerous ways, including using the Leuven scale for wellbeing.  The five-point Leuven scale allows us to monitor children’s behaviour and characteristics to identify their current state of wellbeing.  We then use this information to support our children in any areas they may need help in – with the ultimate goal of impacting their wellbeing in a positive way so they are able to learn productively and prosper.  Another way of assessing our pupils uses a ‘Boxall’ assessment, which helps identify specific needs our pupils need additional support with.  This assessment then feeds into supporting our children’s wellbeing so they are able to reach their learning potential.  Our children with specific needs are supported through a nurture group which is led by a nurture-trained teaching assistant.  This small group focus creates a safe environment for pupils to grow and learn emotionally.

If you have concerns about your child’s wellbeing, then please speak to your child’s class teacher who will be more than happy to support you.  Alternatively, you could contact your child’s GP.  There are also many helpful websites out there to help you in supporting your child’s wellbeing.
