During our exploration of Why do spiders eat flies?, the children showed wonderful curiosity about the natural world, especially after our exciting visit from some real minibeasts in nursery. They were fascinated by how different creatures survive and eagerly shared their ideas. This interest carried into our story sessions, where they thoroughly enjoyed exploring What the Ladybird Heard and What the Ladybird Heard Next, making meaningful connections between the creatures in the stories and the minibeasts they observed.
Across the provision, the children engaged in a wide range of learning experiences. At the maths table, they explored patterns and symmetry, carefully creating symmetrical butterflies. In their mark making, they enjoyed drawing minibeasts while developing their control and confidence in letter formation, particularly in their name writing. In the creative area, the children worked collaboratively to make the ‘fine prize cow’ from the story, as well as painting tractors and farm animals inspired by the books.

Outdoors, the children have been building their teamwork skills through activities such as parachute games, as well as exploring the mud kitchen and mud pit, where they were delighted in searching for and discovering their very own insects within our nursery outdoor space. It has been a joy to see their confidence, creativity, and understanding flourish through such rich, hands-on experiences.
