This half term we held an exciting science afternoon in children made predictions, investigated and recorded results. In the research lesson the children used the internet to research what the impact of the melting polar ice caps may be on our planet and what we can do to prevent this from happening. They then designed gorgeous, vivid posters to show off the impressive knowledge they had acquired in the session.
In the outdoor session, the children explored whether mass would impact the speed of a paper gyrocopter. The children made a prediction in class then went outside to see if their prediction was correct! They worked in pairs to drop gyrocopters of different masses to explore how the speed was impacted. They then recorded their results in a table to see if any trends were present. It was very interesting exploring with the children what variables may have impacted the investigations results such as wind or dropping the gyrocopter from different heights.
In their explorify session the children discussed how to thoroughly clean hands. We learned that even if we can’t see dirt on our hands it might still be present! To investigate how soap gets rid of dirt, the children added pepper, which represented dirt on our hands, to a bowl of water and dipped their finger in. They observed how the pepper stuck to their fingers. They then dipped their finger in soap and put it in the bowl- the pepper shooted away and was repelled by the soap, just like dirt on our hands!
