In Reception we not only want our children to be confident and fluent readers, but to have a love for reading as well. We engage our children in reading in many different ways, including; phonics, shared read sessions where we focus on the same book for 2 weeks, daily story times and weekly poetry sessions. This half term we have also introduced a ‘magical story’ into our daily routine, this is where the children get to make a vote and select a book that they would like to hear at some point during the day, this again promoting a love for stories. Over the past few weeks the staff have been very impressed with the children’s reading skills and their ability to retell stories and poems that they have previously heard in class. Children are also applying their phonics and what they have heard, during story sessions, into their play, their reading and their writing. WOW boys and girls what a great half term we have had!
